Classic hypnosis (using post-hypnotic suggestions) may be very useful. It is most helpful for people who are suggestible and easily directed. This type of therapy frequently is not effective for persons who tend to be analytical or think critically.
Those who fit the latter category, Ericksonian hypnotherapy or NLP techniques are much more successful. These tools are great for successfully communicating with the unconscious mind, which is the seat of our thoughts and feelings. This happens because the resistance typically offered by analytical persons to suggestiveness is bypassed.
A tool offered through that clients are frequently taught to boost self-confidence is called anchoring. Anchoring is a normal experience. For instance, if you hear an old song, and have sensations of deja vu, it's because your unconscious connected the emotions that you were having at one time, with the lyrics of the song was playing at the time. So now when you hear the music again, the unconscious triggers the feelings connected with it. For this reason the song is an anchor for those feelings.
Through anchoring, clients are reminded of a time that made them feel the emotions of confidence. When they remember and relive those sensations, they are instructed to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then relates the sensations of self-confidence with the two fingers touching together. If the person reports that he or she has no memory of an emotion of self-confidence, the person is assisted to create an imaginary event in which they do see themselves being confident, and then anchor that instance of confidence.
After anchoring the emotions of confidence, on those occasions that demand self-confidence, anchoring triggers emotions of confidence for use in the present situation.
Another very powerful NLP technique called the "Flash" can be used to instantly substitute stressful emotions, which are frequently connected with low self-confidence. With the Flash, the individual diverts the mental pictures that cause negative emotions, to trigger visual pictures to produce a positive feeling.
For instance, the person programs the unconscious to employ the visual pictures that trigger feelings of insecurity, as triggers for visual cues that precipitate feelings of confidence. It is our mental images that trigger our emotions.
Every person has goals, and desires. Many individuals can strive toward these to realize their desires. Sometimes, however, people let their low self-confidence to overpower them. Although NLP might not successfully treat all clients, the overwhelming majority of clients who attempt this technique tell of great success in boosting self confidence. This approach is usually better than alternative approaches for the majority of people.

NLP has often been reported to be very successful by the majority of individuals who have used this technique.
