Facial Tics Quickly Erased With NLP Or Hypnotism

by Alan B. Densky, CH

As many as one-fourth of all children contend with the painful embarrassment of facial tics. This condition can most accurately be described as a repeatedly occurring spasm affecting both facial and eye muscles. The true cause is often unknown, although research has demonstrated a significant connection between stressors and an increase in the evidence of symptoms.

Another possible cause of tics is a deficit in essential vitamins or minerals, such as magnesium. In certain instances, facial tics are symptoms of nervous system disorders, such as Tourette syndrome, a health condition resulting from a malfunction of the nervous system. This health condition is believed to have a hereditary facet as well.

Some examples of a facial tic include rapid eye movements or eye blinking, squinting, mouth or nose wrinkeling, twitching, grunting, mouth twitches, facial grimacing, facial twitches, and throat clearing. A tic often starts in childhood, and can last for merely weeks, months, or even years. At times, the tic lasts even after a child reaches adulthood.

Facial tics can persist and exacerbate anxious disorders in a child already experiencing significant stress because of the tic itself. Children's playmates can at times be very unkind, making fun of the child's problem. Worse, educators who do not understand and are unable to help other students to understand and assist the child in conquering his difficulty can have a devastating effect on a child's self image.

This issue, however, is not limited to the suffering child. Adults who must cope with a facial tic find this extremely difficult to manage. These persons frequently struggle with significant social difficulties. In some instances, a person can teach themselves to recognize the onset and master the urge that causes the facial tic. Even this, however, can result in intense emotional and physical energy drains. Low self-esteem is often a major issue with which these people wrestle. Often, these individuals struggle with low self-esteem.

Grownups who obtain relief from the humiliating effects of facial grimaces and other tics can experience social rebirth. Their perception of themselves improves, and they no longer are afraid to experience the fullness of life. Young people who successfully this problem experience freedom the overwhelming emotional pain that hinders their social lives, and experience childhood with joy instead of psychic pain.

Sometimes, medications, such as mildly sedating drugs, can help treat this condition. While the medications may decrease the appearance of these symptoms, the drugs themselves can often cause adverse effects. Because of this, persons sometimes rely on alternative therapies to help them in treating their condition.

Two treatment approaches that have offered exciting potential in helping clients to overcome facial tics are hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). These therapies capitalize on the strengths of the individual's subconscious to help them redirect the repetitive behavior. Because these therapies address the root of the problem through intervening in the unconscious where the problem originates, they are significantly more beneficial than traditional therapy methods that just attempt to control eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, facial grimacing, facial twitches, grunting, or other types of impulsive behavior.

Hypnotherapy helps the client to reach a restful trancelike state and accept suggestions that assist them to release stress. Because tics are a result of suppressed tension within a person's body, release of the tension enables them to successfully control the impulse. After several sessions, the client should be able to possess the ability to manage tension successfully.

Alternatively, therapists who use NLP assist the client to train his or her conscious will to utilize stressful stimuli as triggers for thoughts that will relax them. In addition, the client is taught to use a non-related part of the body, such as a toe, to expel the emotional energy that would otherwise be manifested by the facial tic. This technique allows individuals to overcome tension without relying on the humiliating impulse.

Another advantage of both these is that the client is not subjected to adverse effects from medication type therapies. In fact, both hypnosis and NLP are frequently believed to be the treatment of choice for individuals who suffer from tics, such as nose wrinkeling, or throat clearing, because these treatment approaches do not have undesirable side effects. This avoids considerable anguish and distress for the affected person.

Summary: Facial tics can be socially damaging and can result in extreme consequences. Male children are most likely to struggle with this problem, which can last into adulthood; however female children may also experience struggles with tics. While several treatment approaches exist, hypnosis and NLP appear to be the most prudent methods, because they do not cause problematic side effects and are very effective.
