My Heart -
We are thus far separated — but after all one mile is as bad as a thousand — which is a great consolation to one who must travel six hundred before he meets you again. If it will give you any satisfaction — I am as comfortless as a pilgrim with peas in his shoes — and as cold as Charity — Chastity or any other Virtue.

Lord Byron (1788 - 1824) was notorious in so many different ways. He was a world famous poet by the age of 24 but never paid off his gambling debts run up whilst still a student at Oxford University. Admired by many as a protector of those who were downtrodden by the powerful even to the extent of risking his life in wars for a cause in Eastern Europe he believed in he was also a infamous womaniser in England and overseas where he fled on many occasions to escape husbands and fathers. Many of his friends who remained loyal to him during his life acted as bodyguards and accompanied him everywhere he went.
This particular love letter was written to Annabella Milbanke, his future wife. The stories go that she was the only one who could tame him.
