My darling Clemmie,

In your letter from Madras you wrote some words very dear to me, about my having enriched your life. I cannot tell you what pleasure this gave me, because I always feel so overwhelmingly in your debt, if there can be accounts in love…. What it has been to me to live all these years in your heart and companionship no phrases can convey.

Time passes swiftly, but is it not joyous to see how great and growing is the treasure we have gathered together, amid the storms and stresses of so many eventful and to millions tragic and terrible years?

Your loving husband

(Winston Churchill)

Winston Churchill and Clementine Hozier shortly before their marriage Love Letter Clementine and Winston Churchill were married in September 1908. (He was later to become British Prime Minister both during and after World War II.) Although they were reputed to have had a long and close relationship she is known to have had at least one affair.

This occurred whilst away on a lengthy cruise without Winston who had his Parliament duties to keep him busy and in Britain. That cruise started in December 1934 just a month before this letter was written so she would have received whilst having that affair.

Look at the words Winston uses to start this letter about owing her so much in their love shared account just as she is having an affair with a mutual friend. Any affair is wrong but this letter arriving when it did should have pulled her up and reminded her of her absent husband.

If your partner is away from home for any reason whether business or pleasure do you keep in touch to help keep him or her true to you? Maybe we should do so more often.

Carol
