A Romantic Love Letter written by Katherine Mansfield to John Middleton Murray

It is believed that this romantic love letter was written Katherine Mansfield

December 27th, 1915

I felt my smiles chasing in my eyes – I saw the villa, perhaps a cactus near the gate. You writing at a little table, me arranging some flowers & then sitting down to write, too.

Both of us gathering pine cones and drift wood and bruyere for our fire – I thought of what I would have ready for you, soup and perhaps fish, coffee, toast, because Charbon De Bois, which is much cheaper than coal makes lovely toast.katherine mansfield 198x300 Love Letter

I hear, a pot of confitures, a vase of roses, and then I thought de notre bon lit et de nous deux tout seule, seule cachee dans la nuit – the fire perhaps just tinkling – the sea sounding outside et vous etmoi, mon cheri.. with happiness fast asleep on the roof with its head under its wing, like a dove.

Katherine Mansfield, New Zealand born writer, to John Middleton Murray, English critic and writer.

Translation of French words included in this romantic love letter

bruyere – a type of soup

Charbon de bois – a type of log for the fire

confitures – jam

de notre bon lit et de nous deux tout seule, seule cachee dans la nuit – of our good bed and the two of us alone, alone hidden in the night.

et vous et moi, mon cheri. – and you and me, my love

Not all of us speak fluent french (I don’t either) I thought a translation would be helpful to anyone wanting to fully understand the meaning of this romantic love letter.

Isn’t there something romantic about cuddling up in front of a roaring open fire reading love letters. It is definitely not the same in front of an electric radiator is it?
